Guatemala’s Pacaya volcano has been erupting since February, keeping local communities and authorities on high alert.
The streams of molten lava gushing down the mountainside, on the other hand, have become David Garcia’s kitchen and use it to serve up “Pacaya Pizza” he cooked on a smoldering volcanic rock attracting tourists and locals.
Garcia slathers tomato sauce, a generous helping of cheese, and bits of meat on a metal platter that can withstand temperatures of up to 1,000 degrees Celsius (1,800 degrees Fahrenheit) in his improvised kitchen.
While wearing protective clothing from head to his military style boots, Garcia places the pizza on the lava.
Garcia’s kitchen has become a lure for visitors who have worked up an appetite climbing the massive volcano, which is one of Guatemala’s three active volcanoes and is just 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of the capital.
