The Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana noticed how the Japanese express their respect and courteousness, even online, as the Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi’s desk was decorated with symbolic Filipino items during a meeting.
During an internet video conference with Lorenzana, Japan’s defense minister displayed the country’s hospitality by adorning his table with Philippine fruits such as mangoes and bananas. A scale model of a jeepney also sits on Kishi’s desk. The jeepney is the typical form of transportation for the Filipino people.
The defense chiefs of the Philippines and Japan have agreed to further deepen their cooperation in all areas of bilateral defense relations and regional security concerns during the said meeting.
Lorenzana also expressed gratitude to Japan for its ongoing support for the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ capability-upgrading program, claiming the TC-90 patrol aircraft donated by Tokyo is being highly utilized for the AFP’s reconnaissance missions.
Kishi also expressed gratitude to the Philippines for its assistance and participation in the recently concluded virtual Japan-Association of Southeast Asian Nations Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief program, which focused on the military’s role in combating the pandemic.
The two officials also discussed various regional security issues, including the situation in Southeast Asia, Korean Peninsula, and the West Philippine Sea (WPS), and the East China Sea (ECS).
