A 23-year-old woman who was given six doses of the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine by mistake has been released from the hospital where she was being monitored for any adverse reactions.
The woman was administered the vaccine at the Noa hospital in Tuscany, Central Italy, where she was being observed in strict monitoring for 24 hours. The hospital spokesperson said the patient is in good health with no underlying conditions.
A health worker filled the syringe with a whole bottle of a six-dose vaccine accidentally and only realized her error when the shot was already inoculated and saw five empty syringes.
Doctors will continue to monitor the patient’s immune response to the “massive dose of vaccine,” the spokeswoman said.
The woman was given the vaccine before her peers because she is an intern in the hospital.
According to the spokesperson, the hospital is conducting an internal investigation and added that it was “maybe just human error, definitively not on purpose.”
